Location: Franklin Academy High School – 648 Flaherty Ave, Wake Forest, NC 27587
Eligibility: Students grade 6 through 12

The resolution for this debate is: Resolved: For the United States, socialism would be a better economic system than capitalism for promoting the well-being of the average person.
In the morning, students will attend a policy seminar on their debate topic with renown Duke University economist Professor Mike Munger. The late morning and afternoon will be dedicated to debate. Students will debate in teams of two and compete in multiple rounds where they will debate both sides of the debate topic.
The event is free and lunch will be provided to all students and judges. The tournament will be broken up into a high school bracket and a middle school bracket. Any student in grades 6 to 12 is eligible and we greatly encourage new debaters to participate! Debaters should try to find a partner to debate with them, but if they are unable, we will pair them with a partner from their school prior to the tournament. Students should register through the form at the bottom of this page by May 9, 2018.
Coolidge Cup Qualifier
The Coolidge Foundation and Franklin Academy are pleased to announce the third tournament of the Coolidge Debate League at the Luddy Schools. We invite you to participate! Top finishers from the high school tournament will receive “bids” to compete in the 2018 Coolidge Cup Championship and a chance to win the $7,500 Robert L. Luddy-Coolidge Cup Award.
The Coolidge Cup is held from July 1st to July 5th in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. All lodging, dining, and transportation costs, including to and from Vermont, will be covered by the Coolidge Foundation.
The following finishers from the May 12th tournament at Franklin Academy will receive bids to the 2018 Coolidge Cup:
- Both members of the first place high school team.
- Both members of the second place high school team.
- The top four high school speakers (who are not members of the first or second place teams).
The Coolidge Cup Championship in Vermont is open only to high school students; therefore, middle school winners are not eligible to receive a bid to the Coolidge Cup. Trophies will be presented to the top two middle school teams and the top four middle school speakers.
