Bookmaking with Primary Sources: Out of the Files and Into our Imaginations!

A two-day workshop designed for teachers, historians, historical society curators, and any individuals who find primary sources compelling and would like to explore ways to have them show history as an evolving narrative.
Diaries, scrapbooks, account books, and albums from the collections of the Coolidge Foundation and the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation will spark our interest for the first day of bookmaking. We’ll learn to make a variety of simple book forms that can be used to showcase our own work with primary sources or the explorations of our students or museum visitors.
On the second day, we’ll have access to copies of an abundance of letters, maps, photographs, and other primary sources. From these, or from primary source materials from our own collections, we’ll use research and our imaginations to make books that highlight, connect or re-examine particular events from the past. Before the class, participants are also encouraged to explore online primary sources from the Library of Congress and other web sites that will be provided. We’ll conclude with a sharing of these books as well as ideas for further explorations with primary source materials.

Linda is the sole proprietor of Green River Bindery in Guilford, Vermont, where she incorporates both traditional and experimental approaches to her limited edition binding. Linda is an artist on the Vermont Arts Council’s education roster, and works frequently on bookmaking projects with teachers, students, and artists. She has been leading bookbinding workshops for many years and is known for her thoughtful instruction and her thoroughness. Diane learned bookmaking techniques from Linda, has created many bookmaking projects with students over the years and is pleased to collaborate with Linda and class participants to bring history’s ongoing stories to life using primary sources.
