Date: October 8, 1904
Context: This letter demonstrates how smitten Calvin is with Grace—and a bit of his humor too. In the letter, Coolidge writes, “How is it you seem like a new girl each time I see you?” And for the return address, he wrote, “Guess who? / Don’t return in 5 days / He’ll return sooner than that.” Although obviously in love, he still refers to her as “My dear Miss Goodhue” and signs the letter “Calvin Coolidge.” It would not be until December when he started addressing letters to “Grace” and signing them “Calvin.”
From: Guess who?
Don’t return in 5 days
he’ll return sooner than that.
My Dear Miss Goodhue,
This is to punish you for minding me – the first minute I have had today after court and two long conferences with dinner.
I want to take it to tell you what a happy evening you made me. I was too tired to entertain you at all I know and could only give myself up to the enjoyment of it all. I like your gown more than I thought, you were very nice to wear it-may I think for me? How is it you seem like a new girl each time I see you? You are like the morning I told you you were. I wish I was having this afternoon with you like last Saturday and hope I may soon see you.
Sincerely
Calvin Coolidge
