Letter from Calvin Coolidge to his Father

Date: October 25, 1919

Context: Still uncertain about the outcome, Coolidge expresses pride in the Boston Post supporting him. “It is a great event to come down here and make a great Democratic paper support me, greater than being chosen governor.” The election was a rematch of the previous contest, where Coolidge had only bested businessman Richard Long with just over 50% of the vote. This time, Coolidge triumphed, winning over 60% of the vote.

My dear Father:

Mother’s letter came this morning. The election is uncertain. You will see that the Post has come out for me today in the editorial article.

It is a great event to come down here and make a great Democratic paper support me, greater than being chosen governor.

I hope you will get someone to take care of mother. She would be so much more comfortable I know.

Your Son,

Calvin Coolidge
