Letter from Calvin Coolidge to John Coolidge

Date: May 24, 1926

Context: Coolidge instructs his son to “enroll yourself” in the University of Vermont’s summer school. John did go to summer school at UVM for two summers, 1926 and 1927.

My Dear John:

Your letter has been received and I am returning to you the letter from Dean Esty, so that you can keep it for future use.  Your mother has written to Mrs. Stevens and will probably have a reply in a few days, so you may as well go ahead and write to the Dean and enroll yourself.  I do not suppose you can take all three of these subjects at once, so I imagine you may be required to go up there for two summers.  You might inquire of the Dean of the summer school what his opinion is about that. You will see that you are required to have a grade of C, which I should presume is of a standing that will make it necessary for you to do very thorough work.

In these last few days of the college year I hope you will not fail to pay a good deal of attention to your college work.  You will have a chance to rest after vacation begins and when you get down here. Your mother and I expect to be in the Adirondacks, which is fifty-four miles from Plattsburg.  There is  a very good road and it will be possible for you to come there for one or two week ends, making a short stay that will not interfere with your studies.

Reports keep coming to me that you are spending more time at some other fraternity house than you are at your own. I hope you will not let anything of that kind interfere with your college work.

Your father,

Calvin Coolidge
