Date: April 29, 1891
Context: In the spring of 1891, Coolidge went to St. Johnsbury academy in St. Johnsbury Vermont for a post high school course of study. This letter, apparently written on multiple dates, begins with an admonition; Calvin had apparently not been addressing his letters in enough detail, and so his latest one had been sent to New Hampshire.
Dear Calvin,
Your father received yours, this morning, it went to NH. Please put Vermont on in full to your letters you direct to us. We were glad to hear from you & learn you were all right, have been afraid your health was not good & am not quite certain yet. I think you will be careful of yourself. All well here with the exception of colds. Edna Moore is going to teach School in Bridgewater. Rollo Watterman had a son born yesterday. The weather is cold the ground was quite white with snow this morning, it is gone now. Mrs Butler world for me last Monday. She has been to Ludlow taking care of Ruth Boyd ever since you left & is with her now. Mrs Seth Wilder has Mrs Gilley to take care of. I guess she will find there is some work in it, before long. Ephraim remains feeble. I called to see Harriet B last week she gains very slowly. Dr Corwin from N.H. preached here last Sunday from John & the words of his text were never man spoke like him. He gave us an excellent Sermon, they talk of hire-ing him to Bridgewater, he looks about your age in the dusk, but older when talking with him face to face. I have heard he was about 29, he was liked very much here there is no stammer in him. June 1, I will try & finish my letter. Rollo W. baby died today. Allen Carlysle, is shearing sheep for your father today. I had a nice mess of trout for dinner, your father caught early this morning. I wished you was here to take dinner with us. Have you a roommate yet & who is it. Hope you are having a nice time & enjoy yourself. Jenney & your father cleaned the School house Wednesday & Thirsday this week. Mr Aldrich’s folks came today Jenney said they enquired for you she says it seems as if the children have not grown much. Harlan was glad to get her back.
