Context: John, twelve, gives his father a rundown of his arithmetic grades. John asks about his mother. Grace was in Boston, attending to duties as first lady of Massachusetts. She was on hand to, along with the governor, welcome President Woodrow Wilson back to the United States after the Versailles Peace Conference. Said the Boston Daily Globe of the president’s arrival, “Boston, the city chosen by the President of the United States as the port of debarkation upon his return from the Peace Conference, had sustained her old traditions. Boston turned out en masse to welcome Mr. Wilson.”
My dear father:
I received your letter. I am sending you my report card. My name was on the list for week averages in arithmetic. It was 97.8 I also had my name on the honor list in arithmetic for the month of February. It was 90.1 We had an arithmetic test to-day and I was one of the four that got a hundred. The others were Frank Lucier, Madeleine Robert and Mildred Tichy. I hope mother will be home to-morrow. I hope you are well. I am writing on Calvin’s geography at the dining room table. I hope mother will let me take violin lessons. Stephen Brown is helping me and I can play some notes out of his book. He asked Miss Jones on Washington Ave. if she could take me and she said she couldn’t at present but would be able to do so soon. I think it would be lots of fun. The man that lives in the second house this way from Franklin Street makes violins and he has about twenty-five on hand now. Stephen Brown knows him. “Cal”, the Brown Boy and myself have tapped seven maple trees and have over a gallon of sap. Two of the trees yield very fast. After we get the sap we are going to boil it down. We have boiled down a gallon already. I would be glad to come to Boston some Saturday. I hope next time I come I can go in.
