Letter from Lady Bird Johnson to John Coolidge

Date: October 18, 1995

Context: Johnson thanks John Coolidge for his hospitality during her visit to the Calvin Coolidge homestead. Mrs. Johnson first met John when she visited Plymouth Notch in June 1967. According to the New York Times, “Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson toured the home of the 30th president and affixed a plaque that marked it as a ‘national historic landmark.’” The Times also said of the 1967 visit that “Mrs. Johnson brought a gift, a colored photograph of herself standing beside a larger-than-life oil painting of Mrs. Calvin Coolidge that hangs in the White House.”

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge,

If this were my last visit to see New England, I’m glad I enjoyed it so enormously! It was such a pleasure to return again to the Calvin Coolidge historic site, and I appreciate your kindness in being on hand to welcome me once more. Thank you for the handsome commemorative print, which will remind me of a
delightful morning at a place of historic significance to the country and to your beautiful state.

The journey there led me through spectacular scenery—the old covered bridges, the panoply of changing colors, the white steeples punctuating the glorious countryside. Seeing your father’s home
in the spring back in White House days, and now in the fall, provides a rich perspective of how the surrounding landscape must have helped to shape his life.

With my great appreciation,

Lady Bird Johnson
