Letter from Calvin Coolidge to his Father

Date: Postmarked September 30, 1897

Location: Northampton, MA

Dear Father:—

It seems to me that the enclosed promises to be a good investment. Very competent business men are putting in money. Adna Brown will be interested to some extent, but as he is negociating with the B & M road as to his Springfield street way he is not nominally in it. Mr. Hammond has always been anxious for his company to build this road but they have put out all their money in Holyoke. It is possible they may buy this later if they can. Street ways around here always have paid well and the stock has risen above par. Under present conditions I should expect this stock to sell for 150 when the road gets to running. They can take the books out of town and get the money in a day, but prefer local capital as far as possible. Shares are $100 each. Ten per cent will be paid in about a month and the rest next spring probably May and June. G. M. Thompson is the engineer who made the grade crossing here. His interest insures careful engineering. Of course one cant tell how any thing will pan out, but I think you would find ten or twenty shares a wise investment. If it would save any taxes I can take the stock and give you a power of atty like the enclosed, sending you the cirtificates to keep for me. Tax here is about a dollar and a half. 20 shares are being held. If you want all or any fill out the blank and return by Sat. If you are anxious you better telegraph me Sat. morning just stating no. of shares.

I guess I have enough money to pay the 10% on 10 shares and think I shall subscribe for that amount if you think you would like to put in $750 or 800 on the ten shares next spring. What do you say to that?—If you decide not to take any yourself.—

I thought I had a blank but have not, so if you think you want any stock just have the agent wire me—collect—Saturday, just Northampton as the messenger can find me all right. I should like to have you write me anyway. I send piece of Amherst Paper which is not very well informed it seems on the prospects.

Vry Affectionately

Calvin Coolidge
