Presidential Interior Design: A History of the White House

This infographic from The Rug Seller shows the tremendous changes the White House has undergone through the decades; embracing new interior design styles while letting them sit comfortably next to some antique furniture that has been in the White House for decades. As you’ll see by the infographic rugs are far more than functional flooring coverings that give comfort underfoot. Although they do just that, they’re also used to make a statement and what better place to make a visual statement than the White House? It is common practice that each President is allocated their own renovation budget to enable him to add his mark, so to speak, on interior design aspects. Many choose, or their First Lady does, a new design for the rug in this famous room during their time in the Oval Office. The rug itself is one subtle method of letting the world have a visual representation behind their ideologies reflecting the era and personality of each President while they are in office.

Coolidge Debate Alumni Featured on Fox News

The Coolidge Foundation’s debate programs attract some of the brightest young Americans in the country. We are proud of the accomplishments of all the students who have become part of our Coolidge Family. We are excited to report that two alums of our 2015 World Schools Debate Camp have been featured on Fox News Channel analyzing the 2015 Democratic and Republican presidential primary debates. Feiry Guaba and Joelle Garcia are both middle school students in New York City, and their sharp perspective on the debating skills of the candidates has wowed host Greg Gutfeld, as well as audiences across America. Six Decades of Love Began at Plymouth Notch

I had the pleasure of meeting Carolyn and Frank Baker at the September Antique Apple Festival at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site. Carolyn and Frank’s attachment to the Site goes back many years to their honeymoon in 1956, when they stayed in the middle tourist cabin. Married on August 5, they were beginning their travels around Vermont and New York State and stopped by Plymouth Notch on August 6, 1956. Lodging in the cabin cost $7, and their ham dinner at the Wilder House restaurant was $5. “You could have fit it in a tea cup.” Frank saaid, so he ate some raw hot dogs when they returned to the cabin.

In Memory of Peter Hannaford

Coolidge scholar and key Reagan adviser Peter D. Hannaford died at age 82 at his Eureka, California home on September 5, 2015. His 2001 book, The Quotable Calvin Coolidge: Sensible Words for a New Century, helped set the stage for the current renaissance in Coolidge scholarship and appreciation.
