Championship Tournament Details
Eligibility: To compete in the championship rounds of the Coolidge Cup, debaters must qualify either through a designated preliminary competition including a Coolidge Foundation sponsored regional tournament or through our online speech competition. Additionally, the Coolidge Cup utilizes an invitational system through which winners at other major tournaments are invited to compete. All Coolidge Cup competitors must be in grades 9-12 during the 2017-2018 school year.
Online Tournament: All high school students are encouraged to compete in the Coolidge Foundation’s online speech tournament. This is the most straightforward way to qualify for the Coolidge Cup National Championship tournament. Prizes: The overall Coolidge Cup champion will receive the $7,500 Robert L. Luddy-Coolidge Cup Award. A total of $10,000 will be awarded to the top finishers.
Debate Format: The Coolidge Cup is format neutral, meaning that the debate format is structured in such a way that debaters with experience in all different formats of debate are able to compete against each other effectively. In the Cup Championship tournament, qualifiers debate in a one-on-one format (i.e. everyone debates individually, there are no partners). Specifics on speech times and orders, as well as point scoring, will be forthcoming.
